Just got back from a highly successful scouting mission for the Great Plains Trail in South Dakota and North Dakota, the details of which I will describe in a later post highlighting a few sections.
Below are some of the highlights from Custer National Forest, South Dakota:

The road toward the Cave Hills portion of Custer National Forest

The sticker on the truck begins to gather dust

On the GPT! A two track “road” through the grass. I biked this section and got lost a few times following trails that eventually petered out.

Now that’s some Great Plains dust!

Is there any possibility that the trail would pass the Slim Buttes? That might be my favorite spot in South Dakota.
Indeed. Right through Slim Buttes!
Awesome. That makes me really want to hit the trail. Will you have a more detailed map of the route available?
Probably not for a while … Maybe 2017? Sorry we can’t go faster. I’d love to, but the routing, while fun, takes a long time …
The Custer National Forest doesn’t seem to have a lot of forest. (<;
Not tons. Pretty thin, but some trees along the ridge tops.
